Colonies Unite

Colonialism has created many tensions between people and the controlling governments. Some people want to strike out and form a new nation, while others want to stay within the existing government. By exploring different peoples’ perspectives of the colonial period in US history we will learn what views these people had on British rule over the colonies, and how different history could have been for the colonies if every person’s voice had been heard.

Driving Questions:

Should the colonies be independent and split away from Great Britain?

If everyone’s voice was heard in the American Colonies, would they have declared independence?

What sorts of powers should a government have over its people?

Project overview:

Students will represent a particular group of people (called a constituency) from the colonial period in an open congress. In the congress, teams will  argue whether or not the colonies should revolt against Great Britain from the perspective of the people in their constituency.
